The RMAC is a Southwestern New Mexico Art Paradise

The Roswell Museum and Art Center in Roswell, New Mexico is an inspirational representation of the Southwestern art scene.

Art inside the Roswell Museum and Art Center varies from room to room. The first room straight ahead from the entrance hholds the sculpture of a coyote. Various paintings adorn the halls of the RMAC, many of residents of Roswell, including some egg tempura, fresco and oil paintings of various people.

Some of the paintings in the lineup include examples from the Roswell artist-in-residence program. Susan Dopp, Ted Kuykendall and Mimi Kato have all served as artists in residence and have had their art displayed at the RMAC. The Roswell artist-in-residence program is an initiative that was created by businessman and artist Donald B. Anderson in 1967. He wanted to "enhance the cultural environment in Roswell and Southeastern New Mexico by bringing artists of national importance to live and work in the tranquility of the high plains," according to the Roswell artist-in-residence website.

Other works on display are paintings of Roswell history such as one of the Goddard rocket, which was done with acrylic on canvas. The rocket was created by rocket pioneer Robert Goddard., who developed rockets in the Roswell area from 1926 to 1941, according to Time Magazine. There are also paintings of Native Americans and their ceremonies. and dark abstract paintings, done with a gothic touch and modern feel.

The museum also houses a scuplture collection, and an exhibit of photographs, including some black and white images done with a Southwest flair, like one of cowboy boots with spurs, and another of a rancher at a stable. These images define Southwest art.

The History

History lovers will be certain to fall in love with the treasures that the Roswell Museum and Art Center has hidden inside: everything from contraptions of the early 20th Century to taxidermist replicas of animals caught during trapping days.

Just to the left of the entrance of the museum, a separate hall holds a fascinating plethora of equipment, tools and machinery used around Roswell area. There are photos that show the Goddard rocket, There are guns, swords and other weapons. There is even a stuffed platypus to recognize fur trapping in the early parts of Europeans' lives on the frontier. At the Roswell Museum and Art Center, the stage is set to show a glimpse of Roswell's unique history.
